A Guide to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy via Telehealth

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a behavioral parenting training module for children between the ages of 2 and 7 that began in the 1970s, gaining more popularity in the 1990s and beyond. At its core, PCIT helps to promote:

  1. Healthy Attachment between Parent and Child
  2. Child’s sense of Accountability
  3. Consistency in Daily Routines and Discipline Methods

Is this just Play Therapy?

Not quite! PCIT is a structured parent coaching program. In each different phase of PCIT, you will have guidance from your coach at every turn.

Does Parent-Child Interaction Therapy work through telehealth?

YES! Many parents believe that their young children will not respond well to telehealth. However, PCIT is between parent and therapist. All you need is a reliable internet connection, two video sources (tablet, computer, phone) and a pair of headphones! The therapist will be in your ear coaching you through real-time play with your child, handling situations as they arise. This helps you feel much more confident in your ability to parent your child’s specific behaviors in specific situations. PCIT through telehealth is just as effective as in person coaching, as in both incidents, cameras and headsets are used.

I’m nervous about the process of being coached.

Completely understandable, however there is no need to be nervous! PCIT coaches are there for you to be your biggest cheerleader during successes and your back up support when things get stressful. The goal is to make you feel more confident in your ability to handle stressful situations. With consistent practice and frequent praise, you will graduate PCIT with pride and preparedness.
